Scents created from essential oils that aid in natural healing; this is a basic definition of what Aromatherapy is. This like herb remedies is an ancient art of blending oils from plants to promote natural healing. These oils in their purist form have long been thought to have these healing properties on both body and mind. The absorption of these oils through either the nose, or through the skin is the common ways essential oils are absorbed.
Essential oils are drop of oil that are found in plants. Depending on the plant, they can be found in the veins or glands of plant. Included in that is the leaves, the bark the flower, the roots or the fruit. Think of plants like rosemary, tomatoes or flowers like roses or marigolds and think how fragrant they are. This is the plants essential oils being released into the air as vapors. Just like with water the warmer it is the more the oils are heated and make a steam and become far more fragrant. For this reason, you will smell roses and gardenias and such more in the summer than in the winter or in cooler weather.
How oils are extracted influences how pure they are and if they are the highest grade they possibly can be. In fact, the only way to produce a true essential oil is through distillation and expression methods of extraction.
The distillation method of essential oil extraction is the use of steam to open the glands of the plant and release the oils. The plants are then submerged in cold water and the oils are collected. This is a very popular method however this method also does affect the oil pricing because it takes large quantities because of how pounds maybe be involved to make one single bottle.
The expression methods is the process you would normally find being used to extract from items such as olive oil. It.s a squeeze or cold-press or cold-expressed method to extract the oil from the plant. This is very common in fruit plants. Additionally this method is selected if the heat process would alter the properties.
There are other extraction methods but they do use solvents to extract these oils. When solvents are used in the extraction process, they do leave traces in the oils and lower the grade or quality of the oil.
