Herbal Medicine: Why it works.
Herbs used for medicinal purposes are categorized in a few different ways.
There are Flower Herbs chamomile, elderflower and marigold. There are Bark Herbs like willows. There are Leaf like sage, rosemary, Thyme. There is also Stem, Seed, Gel Root Lichens, Seaweed and Fungi.
These herbs have many different properties that create active ingredients. Hebalists try to maintain the integrity of the herbs leaving them as close to their natural makeup as possible. You may already participate in some forms of herbalism if you are eating foods or drinking teas that are rich in vitamins, or anti-oxidants.
Best of all is the lack of side effects. No side effects may include lines like you hear on the TV. Herbs side effects are complimentary. Chamomile is relaxing and it.s a sleep aid. Its not relaxing and raises your blood pressure. So the effects are complementary not in opposition of each other. Take for instance the acid blockers, they stop acid reflux but give you a headache and diaherra. Those are not complementary. And they are a negative because they work against nature not with nature the way herbs do.
In the late 20th century herbalism has fallen off in lieu of synthetic drugs. In the last few years though there has been resurgence in turning to old world medicines.
